New bill could end new UK oil and gas

New bill could end new UK oil and gas

New energy bill is confirmed – and it could be the end of ocean-wrecking Big Oil in the UK.

In his State Opening of Parliament, the King has today introduced the new Energy Independence Bill. Done right, the bill could be the starting gun for a truly renewable powered future. But only if the government holds firm on its commitment to end new oil and gas exploration.

For our ocean, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Oil and gas exploration and extraction damage and destroy marine life – from spills and industrial noise to the growing impacts of the climate crisis.

This is a rare window of opportunity. A chance to protect our seas, while accelerating the transition to cleaner energy.

But moments like this don’t stay open for long.

We know that oil and gas lobbyists will be doing everything they can to protect their profits and open the door to more drilling. The decisions made in the weeks ahead, as the bill passes through the different stages of parliamentary process, will determine whether the new law delivers real progress, or falls short of what our ocean needs.

The Ocean Alliance Against Offshore Drilling is ready to ensure that the ocean is protected, and new North Sea oil is finished for good. Together, we’re calling on the UK Government to hold firm and commit to ending new oil and gas in UK waters, protecting our seas, and backing a truly renewable future. Will you join us?
